Mood Disorders

Disorders which are characterized by prominent disturbances in a person’s mood and emotions are called mood disorder. Two of the major mood disorders are:
1. Major Depressive Disorder:
Major Depressive Disorder or what is commonly called Depression is characterized by persistent sadness or irritability of mood, loss of interest in day to day life activities, inability to experience pleasure from activities, loss of sleep or excessive sleeping, reduced appetite or erratic eating patterns, among other symptoms. For the diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder the symptoms must persist for a continuous period of at least two weeks. Suicidal thoughts may occur during the course of MDD, assessment and treatment of which is ordained to be immediate. Suicidal ideation is considered to be a mental health emergency and must be addressed immediately.
2. Bipolar Mood Disorder:
Bipolar Mood Disorder is diagnosed if an individual suffers a Manic Episode, which is characterized by elated, euphoric or irritable mood, expansive affect (expression), racing thoughts which are grandiose and disproportionate and pressure of speech. During a Manic Episode, a person might appear to be functioning in a high-energy state “as-if run by a motor”. They may seem to need very few hours or sleep or no sleep. Other characteristic features of this disorder are reckless spending and uncharacteristic indulgence in high-risk taking activities.
